How to measure your pool for a robotic cleaner

Pool robots are rated by floor area, by length, or both. Here's how to get both numbers for your pool, whatever its shape.

Length

Measure the longest straight line across the water, wall to wall. For freeform and kidney pools, measure the longest straight run. Dolphin and Polaris rate their robots this way.

Area

  • Rectangle: length × width.
  • Freeform or kidney: measure the rectangle around the pool and take about 85% of it. Our finder uses that allowance.
  • Round: 3.14 × radius × radius. A 24 ft round pool is about 452 sq ft.
  • Oval: 3.14 × half the length × half the width.

Aiper and Beatbot rate robots by floor area in sq ft or m². If your pool has a deep end, the actual floor and wall area is larger than the flat footprint, so leave some margin.

Ratings are maximums. Steps, ledges, deep ends and heavy debris all take time. If your pool uses more than about 85% of a robot's rating, look at the next size up. The pool robot finder flags tight fits.
